Football in Jammu faces crisis, calls for unified action: Malhotra

JAMMU, Dec 22: Arun Malhotra, former Indian footballer and Technical Member of the All India Football Federation, has expressed serious concern over the ongoing crisis in Jammu & Kashmir football, particularly in light of the recent Santosh Trophy selection controversy. He emphasized that any situation causing confusion or disappointment among players must be addressed with sensitivity and transparency to maintain confidence and unity within the football community.
Malhotra pointed out that football in Jammu has suffered prolonged stagnation due to a lack of regular tournaments, league structures and competitive exposure. This has hampered player development and created hurdles in identifying and nurturing new talent. He stressed that grassroots development, combined with strategic planning, is essential to rejuvenate the sport. Regular local tournaments and leagues, community engagement and early exposure in schools and colleges can help generate interest and sustain long-term growth.
The former footballer also highlighted the critical need for improved infrastructure. Currently, Jammu has only two turf fields—Nagrota, which is too small for 11-a-side matches and the overcrowded Parade Ground. The Science College ground is substandard and requires upgrading. Malhotra urged the Government to expedite astro-turf projects across Jammu and all districts, ensuring all-weather facilities for players, alongside coach education programs to enhance skills and nurture talent.
In Jammu, football can greatly benefit from the involvement of ex-players and the corporate sector, building on the region’s notable football talent. However, the non-formation of JKFA has resulted in the complete halt of league tournaments. Given the uncertainty surrounding the JKFA’s revival, which has been pending for five years, it’s crucial that stakeholders take initiative. We should focus on sustainable growth by reducing dependence on Government-funded tournaments and fostering a more inclusive football environment. Now it is the ideal time to rejuvenate football in Jammu through collaborative efforts that offer opportunities to the youth.
Malhotra stressed the importance of a unified approach, suggesting the formation of an independent selection committee comprising experienced footballers from both provinces to prevent future controversies. He called on former players, coaches, corporate leaders and enthusiasts to collaborate in creating opportunities for young athletes, revive league tournaments, and build a structured football ecosystem in Jammu.
