Srinagar, Sept 7: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin today stressed the need for league cricket to take root in Kashmir, saying it was essential to nurture young talent and push it further.
Speaking to Excelsior during an exclusive conversation on the sidelines of a specialized training camp at the MS Cricket Academy here, Azharuddin said Kashmir is rich in cricketing potential but lacks proper guidance and infrastructure.
He also underlined the need for a proper cricket ground in Kashmir to prepare youngsters for the game and enable them to grow with consistency.
“Kashmir has a lot of talent, but guidance remains the missing link. A proper stadium and supporting infrastructure are crucial to nurture this potential and provide players the facilities they deserve,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of infrastructure, the former skipper said Kashmir needs a proper cricket ground with turf wickets.
“If you have astroturf or cement wickets, there will be no improvement in the game. Players must get used to turf wickets, which prepare them for real challenges. That is why I repeat, there is a need for having a proper cricketing ground here,” he said.
He also pointed out that the absence of a league system in Kashmir hampers the growth of cricket, even though academies play their role.
“Here, activities including selections are happening through academies, but there is no league system as we see in other States. That leaves less scope for improving the game,” he remarked.
Sharing his experience of interacting with budding cricketers, Azharuddin said it was a pleasure to spend time with them and witness their talent and potential.
“It is great to be here, the weather is amazing and early morning it was chilly. It was a great experience to be with the youngsters and give them lessons. Kashmir is always an important place.”
Azharuddin, renowned for his elegant batting style and leadership, also shared his vast experience from representing India at the highest level.
His hands-on guidance and insights into the finer nuances of the game were aimed at honing the skills of the budding cricketers attending the camp.
He noted that many players from Jammu and Kashmir have come close to breaking into the Indian team but fell short due to lack of confidence and sustained guidance.
“Players from here often believe they won’t get a chance, but that is not the case. If you play well and remain consistent, you will get opportunities,” he said.
According to him, nearly 90 percent of the youngsters he interacted with showed promise.
“If they get the necessary guidance and from time to time experts come here to mentor them, they will become good players,” he added.
Azharuddin urged youngsters not to give up easily and to remain consistent in their game even if they feel they are hitting a brick wall.
“We have seen players quitting quickly. Giving up is easy, but if you desert your talent, it will have no impact. One should not give up. Even we were not selected many times, but that doesn’t mean you sit back. You have to keep playing consistently to make a difference,” he said.
Promising his support, Azharuddin said: “If there is anything good happening for the game and if my inputs are needed, I will definitely help. I see a lot of talent here, but there is no proper support or assistance.”
