JAMMU, Feb 23: The University of Jammu organized the “Race for Rare,” a 7-kilometer marathon and walkathon under the nationwide Racefor7 campaign by the Organization for Rare Diseases in India (ORDI). The event aimed to raise awareness about rare diseases, drawing over 150 participants, including students, faculty members, medical professionals and advocates, all united in support of the 70 million Indians affected by rare diseases.
The event was organized by the Science Club (Utsaah), in collaboration with the Institute of Human Genetics, Department of Zoology, Department of Paediatrics (SMGS Hospital, GMC Jammu), and the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. The run symbolized the 7,000 known rare diseases and the 7-year average delay in diagnosis. This event also marked the 10th anniversary of Racefor7.
Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean of Research Studies at the University, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about rare diseases. Prof. Prakash C. Antahal, Chairperson of Utsaah, highlighted the significance of interdisciplinary efforts.
Medical experts, including Dr. Sanjeev Digra, Dr. Parvinder Kumar and Dr. Ravindar K. Gupta, spoke about advancements in genetic research and treatment options for rare diseases. Other notable attendees included Dr. Vikram Sahi, Dr. Amit Gupta, Dr. Shashpal, and Dr. Rajesh Sharma.
Student coordinators such as Dr. Mohd. Younis, Nikita Mahajan, Prajwala, Harsha and others played key roles in organizing the event. Dr. Chinmoyee Maharana, Science Club Coordinator, emphasized that “awareness is the first step toward justice for rare disease patients” and shared plans to expand the campaign across Jammu to support affected families.
