JAMMU, Apr 15: Inter Battalion Sports Tournament, being organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) was declared open at Police Sports Stadium, Gulshan ground, here this evening.
The six-day long tournament was declared open by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Coordination Police Headquarters, PL Gupta, who was the chief guest on the occasion in presence of Additional Director General of Police, Armed, SM Sahai, Inspector General of Police, Armed, PR Manhas, SP Vaid and Dilbagh Singh, ADGPs, Dr B Srinivas, AK Choudhary, HK Lohia, SJM Gillani, Dr KK Saini, Yoginder Koul, SS Khandre and Rajesh Kumar, IGPs, T Phunchok, Surrinder Kumar Gupta and Johny William, DIGs, senior retired police officers, Commandants of Armed and IRP Battalions and other senior police officers.
While speaking, Gupta said that the tournament is aimed at to create sportsmanship among the personnel to shape their figure and discipline. He said that the activity creates a team spirit among the participants to face any hostile situation in day-to-day duties. Besides the tournament helps the organizers to identify talented sports person to form a strong contingent which could represent the Armed Zone in the Inter Zone Tournament being organized by JKP annually, he added.
The selected players also go ahead to represent the Organization at national and international competitions, ADGP said.
A total of 900 sports personnel including 130 women players, representing 28 battalions of IRP and Armed Police, are participating in the tournament to showcase their talent in varied disciplines including basketball, volleyball, football, handball, tug-of-war, boxing, wrestling, weight lifting, swimming, shooting, hockey, kabbadi, marathon, short-put, hammer throw, javelin throw, discuss throw, long jump and high jump. Besides, sports person from officer ranks of the different battalions participate in badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis and shooting, he said.
Giving further details, Gupta disclosed that tournament is being played at different venues including Gulshan ground, Jammu University, District Police Lines, Shooting Range Belicharana, Officers Mess and Sunjwan.
SM Sahai stressed upon the participants to exhibit their high standards of discipline during the tournament without fear of losing or pride of win.
Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and participants, PR Manhas said this Meet provides an opportunity to the sports personnel, who are deployed in different corners of the State for their professional duties, to have a get together and interact.
