KARGIL, Aug 24: CEC LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, inaugurated the 5th LG Horse Polo Tournament at Polo Ground Goshan, Drass, celebrating the region’s traditional sport.
He praised the players, especially from Drass, for their dedication in reviving Horse Polo and acknowledged former LG Brig. (Dr.) BD Mishra for promoting the sport through training initiatives.
Dr. Akhoon shared updates from his meeting with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which assured support and a visit to explore winter sports infrastructure in Drass. He emphasized that ongoing developments-playgrounds, indoor facilities and increased funding-will boost both sports and tourism.
Despite rainy weather, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 17 teams, including 5 women’s teams. Officials including Joint Director Youth Services & Sports Tahir Hussain Zubdavi, Councillors Abdul Samad, Abdul Wahid and SDM Drass Vishal Atri addressed the gathering, reinforcing support for Horse Polo and future tourism-driven sports growth in Ladakh.
