18th UT J&K Wushu C’ship commences

JAMMU, Feb 16: The 18th UT J&K Wushu Championship kicked off at the Indoor Hall, Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, with nearly 1200 players participating from 19 districts, six Khelo India centers and J&K Police. The four-day event was inaugurated by Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister of J&K, who praised the Wushu Association for expanding the sport across the Union Territory. Wani also acknowledged Kuldeep Handoo’s efforts in elevating Wushu in J&K and recognized the medalists from the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.
In his speech, Wani stressed the importance of sports in shaping youth, promoting discipline, determination and self-confidence. He expressed the government’s aim to make J&K a sports hub and encouraged parents to support their children’s involvement in sports to keep them away from drugs and mobile distractions.
The Advisor felicitated the Wushu medalists from the 38th National Games and IWUF Wing Chun Championships in China. The winners included Surya Bhanu Partap Singh and Kamran Mohd Shamas (Gold), Ayeera Chisti (Silver) and Ishant Singh, Rohan Sharma, Saleem Kumar, and Arjun Sharma (Bronze).
Ranjeet Karla, Vice President of the Wushu Association, presented a welcome address, thanking the Advisor for inaugurating the event. Kuldeep Handoo, in his vote of thanks, urged the government to set up a Wushu Academy in J&K to nurture future talent. The competition continues with sub-junior and junior categories fighting for medals.
Other notable guests included Rajeev Sharma (Member Sports Council), Touseef Raina (Mayor, Baramulla), Sadat Aslam Wani (Vice President), Ritika Singh (Manager), Pawan Deep Kour (Athletic), Maqsood Rather (Jt. Secretary), Ranjeet Singh (International Footballer), Ajay Paul Gill and Nissar Ahmed Mir.
