JAMMU, Dec 15: Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Committee meeting for the Rabi 2016-17of Jammu province was organized at Sher-e Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu to finalize the recommendation of the Rabi season crops.
During the meeting, scientists of SKUAST -J and officers of Agriculture, Horticulture, Floriculture and other line departments participated.  Director Extension SKUAST-J, Dr K S Risam informed the house about the objectives and importance of this meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof P K Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J, stressed that discussions during the meeting should be focused on specific and prioritized researchable issues based upon the feed back from the extension functionaries of the line departments. He further desired that efforts should be concentrated jointly by the University scientists as well as the line departments for improvement of socio economic status of the farmers of the Jammu division through adoption of cooperative system.
Dr J P Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, made a power point presentation of the overview of the research activities being carried out in the university.
In his feed back, Director Agriculture, Jammu, A K Malohtra, briefed the house that issues such as judicious use of available water resources, conservation and linking of available water resources with system of micro irrigation, Development Yellow rust resistant varieties, Mushroom cultivation, Apiculture etc are the need of the hour and SKUAST-J should focus on such key areas with capacity building of extension functionaries.
Joint Director Horticulture, S Tarvinder Singh requested that University technologies should be aimed at cost effective vermicomposting, designing of low cost cool chambers for reduction of post-harvest losses in fruits and advances in rainfed horticulture.
During the technical session, the house approved the recommendations presented by university scientists for inclusion in the package of practice of Rabi crops.
