Yaum-e-Ashoora observed with reverence; curbs in Srinagar parts

SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Yaum-e-Ashoora was observed across Kashmir today with reverence to remember the supreme sacrifices made by Imam Hussain and his companions in Karbala city of Iraq during which processions were taken out by Shia community across Valley while Government imposed curbs in parts of summer capital to maintain law and order.

Ashoora, which falls on 10th of Islamic month of Muharram, is the day when Imam Hussain, the Grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred along with his companions in Karbala in 680 A.D. To commemorate the day and pay tributes to Imam Hussain, the Shia mourners carried out Alam and Zuljanah processions across the Valley.
Thousands of people from Shia community attended the Ashoora processions during which they were seen reading ‘Nowah’, beating their chests and inflicting injuries on themselves with chains and knives. The largest gathering of Shia mourners was held at Zadibal area of Old City in which thousands of Shia community members participated throughout the day.
Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association president and Minister for Information Technology, Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Molvi Imran Raza Ansari said the tragic battle of Karbala teaches sacrifice and perseverance for advancing the cause of truth. The Minister was addressing a congregation organized by Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association to commemorate Ashura at Alipora in Botta Kadal area near Zadibal.
Thousands of devotees attended the congregation to remember sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) and his pious companions in the battlefield of Karbala. Ansari said that the tragic event of Karbala immortalized the fact that ultimately truth prevails and falsehood perishes.
Ansari also led a huge procession from Botta Kadal, Lalbazar which culminated at historic Imambara Zadibal, in which thousands of men, women and children participated to pay their tribute to martyrs of Karbala.
In view of the Ashoora, strict security arrangements were in place across city. A senior Government official told Excelsior that Section 144 was imposed in 13 police station areas of the city as there were apprehensions of miscreants creating law and order problem. He said that the day passed off peacefully and the situation is under control.
Earlier in the day, Shia mourners attempted to take out processions from Lal Chowk, Batamaloo and Jehangir Chowk towards downtown through traditional routes but police did not allow them to proceed and were detained after cane charge. The police also lobbed few smoke shells near Clock Tower in Lal Chowk against the mourners and restored the order.
The Alam and Zuljanah processions were also carried out in other parts of city and Valley. Thousands of people in districts of Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla and Ganderbal attended the Ashoora processions and congregations and paid rich tributes to Karbala martyrs.
