World No Tobacco Day observed

JAMMU, May 31: World No Tobacco Day was observed across the State.
On World No Tobacco Day, a cardiac diseases evaluation camp was organized at Health Centre, University of Jammu, in which 170 patients took part. The camp was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof RD Sharma and was held under the supervision of Dr Sushil K Sharma, Head, Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College Jammu along with a team of doctors which consisted of Dr Arvind Kohli (Cardiac Surgeon), Dr Richu, Dr Mohi Kalsotra, Dr D Kapoor, Dr Atul Vij, Dr Eshan Chopra, Dr Najmus Saqib, Dr Shabana (CMO), Dr Goutam (Dentist), Dr Nosheen (Physiotherapist) and supporting staff including Gurmeet Singh, Waryam Singh, Sanjay Khajuria and volunteers Gourav, Mohan, Lokesh, Vikas, Balwan, Akshay, Gagandeep, Mohsin Raina, Rinku, Nitan and Faiz Mirza.
While speaking, Dr Sharma elaborated the menace of smoking and its ill effect on all the vital organs of the body.
“Smoking and tobacco chewing is single risk factor at present for all killer diseases whether cardiac events, stroke, lung cancer, mouth cancer, malignancies of wind pipe, food pipe and stomach and all sorts of vascular disorders and hence its habit should be eradicated from the society”, he asserted.
Dr Sushil Sharma further highlighted the role of early diagnosis and treatment of cardiac ailments particularly the growing incidence of coronary artery diseases in younger populace.
In this camp the patients were given benefits of diagnostic tests like ECG, biochemistry including blood sugar, lipid and thyroid profile. Free medicines were also distributed and campaign to get aware of all the health issues caused by tobacco use was also launched.
Maharishi Dayanand Hospital and MRC through its Clean Air Taskforce framed today in association with Radiations of Hope (a cancer care initiative) launched anti-tobacco drive on World No Tobacco Day. An awareness lecture was organized to aware the staff, patients and attendants regarding ill-effects of tobacco. Flyers carrying anti-tobacco messages were distributed on the occasion. Members of Clean Air Taskforce apprised people in their vicinity about ill-effects of tobacco. Cancer awareness material was also distributed by the Clean Air Task Force.
Like in every part of the world, “No Tobacco Day” with the theme of “Stop Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products” was also observed in Leh. A marathon “Super Sunday-Run for Health” to focus the menace of tobacco particularly among the youth was organized by the Health Department, Leh, National Health Mission J&K in collaboration with District Police, Leh and supported by Tip Top Sporting Club, Leh, Taxi Union, Restaurant Association Leh, Punjab National Bank, Leh, State Bank of India, J&K Bank, HDFC, M/s Bashir and Sons Khayul Mineral Water Choglamsar. The Marathon started from KBR Road Leh and culminated at Polo Ground, Leh.
Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC, Leh Rigzin Spalber who was the chief guest on the occasion advised the student fraternity to spread awareness in the society starting from their respective homes to make the surrounding tobacco free zone.
Executive Councilor Health Dr Sonam Wangchok, Councilor Upper Leh Gay Lobzang Nyantak, Dr Ghulam Modh Physician Specialist, Dr Tsering Norboo Secretary LIP, Tsewang Namgail from Tip Top Sporting Club and M Basir Drugs Controller also expressed their views.
Later, CEC distributed prizes and Medals among to the position holders in the marathon.
Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Dr Phuntsg Angchok presented the welcome address and in the end, Dr Manzoor-ul-Haq, DHO Leh presented vote of thanks.
Rashtriya Rifles Battalion under Romeo Force conducted a lecture on “Tobacco use: Prevention and Remedy” at Keri. The lecture encompassed the description of tobacco or substance whose abuse could harm humans both mentally and physically.
The aim was to draw attention to the wide spread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effect. It also intended to examine the reasons for tobacco addiction amongst teenagers, students in the area. The lecture mainly focused on interaction with the audience and seeking teenager’s opinion and to bring awareness on the subject.
The participants were advised to refrain from tobacco abuse. The health hazards caused by Tobacco were explained in detail. The lecture also highlighted ways to rid oneself of this habit.
