World Environment Day celebrated

JAMMU, June 5: World Environment Day was celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm.
Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing is observing World Environment Week from today to June 11 at various places. The inaugural function was organized at Bahu Fort today with the theme “Beat Plastic pollution”. The gathering was made aware through Nukkad Natak, speeches and display of banners about use of eco-friendly materials in day to day life. Plants of various species were also distributed among the people. Another awareness programme was organized by the department in collaboration with M/s Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Private Limited and Super Specialty Hospital Jammu.

To celebrate World Environment Day, a plantation drive was carried out by Chairman, Legislative Council, J&K Haji Anayat Ali in presence of Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil, Ahmed Ali Khan, Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Vikas Kundal and SSP Kargil T Gyalpo at DPL Kargil. The plantation drive at DPL Kargil was the part of mega plantation drive organized by District Administration Kargil and Forest Department Kargil. Later, the Chairman Legislative Council J&K also interacted with the Officers and jawans at DPL Kargil.
World Environment Day was celebrated by Nature Human Centric Peoples Movement at Samba. DDC Rajinder Singh Tara, ACR Samba, other senior functionaries of district administration, members of Nature Human Centric Peoples Movement, students and prominent citizens were present on the occasion.
Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu in collaboration with Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), J&K Chapter celebrated World Environment Day on the theme ‘Natural Heritage and Plastic Pollution’. Prof RD Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion and Prof Geeta Sumbali, Dean Life Sciences was the guest of honour. Prof Anil K Raina from Department of Environmental Sciences gave an extensive lecture on various aspects of plastic pollution. Earlier, Prof Raj Kumar Rampal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, presented the welcome address, whereas in the end, Dr CM Seth presented formal vote of thanks.
NSS units of Government Degree College Udhampur in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences celebrated World Environment Day, wherein NSS units of Government Degree College Udhampur organized lecture on the theme “Beat the Plastic Pollution”. Prof Poonam Kundan, a faculty from Environmental Sciences Department of the College was the resource person for the lecture, while Principal of the College Prof (Dr) SK Magotra was the chief guest. Prof Samosh Kumar and Dr Anita Sharma, NSS Programme Officers of the College coordinated the programme.
A symposium on “To Beat Plastic pollution” held at Government Degree College Dharmari Principal of the institution Dr TR Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion. Choudhary Mohammad Waqar, Mohammad Akram and Sabba Nighat were adjudged first, second and third respectively by jury comprising Baldev Singh Assistant Prof, Sham Lal Assistant Prof, Sat Pal Assistant Prof, Dr Mohammad Akhter and Dr. Sunil Tanoch Assistant Prof.
Department of Environment Science in collaboration with NSS Unit of GDC Sarh Bagga Mahore celebrated World Environment Day on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The function was presided over by Prof Ashraf Nawaz, Vice Principal of the College, who also addressed the gathering along with other faculty members of the college. In the end, Prof Shafquat Ahmed, NSS Officer of the college presented vote of thanks.
Government College for Women Udhampur organized a poster making competition on the topic “Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle” to commemorate World Environment Day. Prof BP Singh, Prof Swarna Bhougal and Prof Sanjay Kumar were the jury members. Aakriti Sharma, Vidhushi Bamotra and Sheetal Sharma emerged winners in the competition. Dr Chander Shekhar, Principal GCW Udhampur was the chief guest on the occasion. The vote of thanks was presented by Prof Sanjay Kumar NSS Programme Officer GCW Udhampur.
Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua organised a function in collaboration with NSS Unit of College to celebrate World Environment Day. On the occasion, the Principal of the college Prof. K C Badgal was the chief guest while Dr Deepshikha Sharma, Head of Environmental Sciences, presented the keynote address. Students of the Environmental Sciences Department also expressed their views on the topic and performed a skit on the theme. Professor Neha Gupta conducted proceedings of the programme while Professor Neeru presented the vote of thanks.
One day symposium and painting competitions on the theme “Plastic Waste-Reuse it or Refuse it” was organised at Government Degree College, Doda on the occasion of World Environment Day. The day began with the cleanliness drive which, followed by welcome address by Dr Sumit Kotwal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC, Doda (Organizing Secretary of the event) and lectures by invited lecturers Dr Aijaz Ahmed Wani, HoD, Department of Zoology and Dr Tasir Sharief, Head, Department of Botany. Dr Shafqat Hussain Rafiqui, Principal of the college was the chief guest on the occasion. In symposium, Purvashi Rana, Mumtaaz Hussain and Nawaz Hussain emerged winners, whereas in painting event, Alima Suhrawardy, Irfan Ahmed and Amir Hussain secured first, second and third positions respectively.
NSS Unit of Dogra Law College organized a paper presentation on the topic “Plastic on Environment”. Mubarak Singh, Director Adm and Cd Dogra Educational Trust addressed the gathering. Prof VP Magotra, Principal Dogra Law College was also present on the occasion.
Himalayan College Rajouri’s Eco Club joined hands with locals of the area to celebrate World Environment Day. Deliberating on this year’s United Nations theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the members of the Himalayan Eco Club along with teachers and members of the civil society including the local residents of the area discussed variegated means to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, wildlife and their own health. The programme also included the display of a documentary, followed by symposium, plantation of saplings and pledge taking ceremony.
To celebrate World Environment Day, Sai Shyam College of Education organized a rally on the theme “Say No To Plastic”, in which students and staff members of the College participated. The students during the event approached shopkeepers especially dealing with food items to stop the use of polythene bags. They distributed handmade paper bags to the shopkeepers on spot. Principal Dr Usha Tickoo addressed the participants.
DPS Jammu celebrated World Environment Day. During the special assembly held on the occasion, both staff and students took environment pledge. The school choir presented a melodious group song based on the theme of the day ‘Beat the Plastic Pollution’, followed by a ‘nukkad natak’ on ‘Say No To Plastic’ presented by the students of Ganga House, plantation drive, poster designing, making bird-feeders and hanging them on the trees in the school campus and taking out an ‘Environment Awareness Rally’. Ruchi Chabra, Principal DPS Jammu and Meenu Gupta, Headmistress addressed the students and staff members.
Awareness programme was held at GHSS Chowki Choura to commemorate World Environment Day, in which officers and officials of all the departments participated. A cleanliness drive was held at the Main Market Chowki Choura and Kapagalla Local Vegetable Market. BDO Chowki Choura Ambika Bali, Naib Tehsildar Yashpal Sharma, BMO Ashok Kumar, ZEO Ramrakha Verma and many others were present on the occasion. Around four kilograms of polythene bags were seized from the local vendors and shopkeepers.
World Environmental Day was celebrated in Stephens International Public School. The celebrations were inaugurated by the Director Satvinder Saini. Saplings were planted by the students as well as the staff in the school ground. Principal Manoj Kumar Agnihotri, Amarjit Singh, Vice Chairman and Rama Jamwal, Dean Academics also joined the students in this “Go Green’ effort. To mark the day a ‘best out of waste’ activity was also held, followed by poster making activity, ‘nature walk’ and nukkad natak and rally to promote cycling. Pamphlets were distributed to the local people to sensitize on the topic ‘Air Pollution’. Chairman of the school Dr Kamal Saini was also present on the occasion.
Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Environment Day at Channi Himmat, Jammu. A seminar on the theme topic “Beat Plastic Pollution” was organized in which large number of engineers, scholars, academicians, Environment lovers, and members of the civil society participated. On the occasion Er VN Sharma, FIE, Member Regional Empowered Committee, Northern Region, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and Former Chief Engineer, PWD J&K Government was the chief guest. Er Ravi Chanyal, FIE Chairman, IEI, Jammu Centre appraised the audience about the theme and Er Vijay Sharma, MIE, Honorary Secretary presented the welcome address.
Eight Papers on the theme topic were presented by Er SC Thukral, FIE, Er PK Nanda, MIE, Er BL Rawal, MIE, Er Vinod Kumar, MIE, Er Sunil Seth, MIE, Er Ranjeev Sawhney, MIE, Er Mir Muneer Hussain, MIE and Er Akash Dusgotra, AMIE. Er Vijay Sharma, MIE, Honorary Secretary of the centre conducted the proceedings of the seminar and presented vote of thanks.
World Environment Day was celebrated at AM Hyundai. The day was inaugurated by Chairman Jatinder Gupta in presence of esteemed customers. On the occasion, Chairman Jatinder Gupta gave free pollution check up certificate to every vehicle along with plant saplings. Almost 100 plants were planted in the premises.
Fortune Inn Riviera celebrated World Environment Day by organizing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and cleaned the adjoining places of the hotel. All the hotel staff joined the drive with great enthusiasm and proved this initiative to be a successful one. The highlights of the day were Swach Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Drive), minimum usage of water (no wastage), minimum usage of electricity and planting of saplings.
World Environment Day was celebrated at State Bank of India (SBI), Jammu Office. In order to observe World Environment Day, a function was held in the premises, during which Bank Manager and staff pledged to launch campaign for saving environment. General Manager SBI, Manoj Mehrotra on this occasion also planted saplings to mark this important day.
Army organised a plethora of events to commemorate World Environment Day at Youth Centers Surankote, JWG, Keri and Palma, ITI Mendhar, High School, Jhullas, Dhanwankot and Pir Baba in Rajouri and Poonch districts. The events included awareness lectures, plantation drives and painting competition. The lectures were conducted by Army officers, educationists and prominent members of society. The audience were encouraged to contribute more towards preserving environment and share their ideas and activities for making the world cleaner, greener and a brighter place.
Aadarsh Bhartiya Samaj celebrated World Environment Day under the guidance of Col (Retd) RK Sharma, Chairman and Daljeet Singh, President ABS. Ex Sub Tek Chand Raina addressed the gathering.
World Environment Day was celebrated by Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Private Limited, JK Circle in collaboration with authorities of Super Specialty Hospital and Environment Department at Super Specialty Hospital, Jammu. The celebrations were held under the leadership of RK Dhar, Regional Operating Officer. About 30 employees of the company participated in the programme. Deputy Medical Superintendent SSH Dr Deepak Kumar and District Forest Officer from Environment Department Saleem Ul- Haq delivered a knowledgeable lecture on value of environment. The progrmme was followed by the distribution of bio-degradable carry bags amongst the patient and attendant in hospital premises.
Indian Council for Enviro-Legal Action (ICELA)  in collaboration with Interaction Forum Jammu Province (IFJP) and All J&K Youth Federation (AJKYF) organised a seminar on ” Forest Fires its Cause and remedies” on the eve of World Environment Day. Convenor ICELA J&K Chapter Ashok Sharma Advocate and former Legislator whereas, BS Jamwal former Deputy Commissioner and Chairman IFJP, Chander Mohan Sharma former Deputy Director Agriculture, Dr YP Sawhney former MD Milk Federation, Ex-Additional PCCF Capt LK Sharma, Arjun Sharma, State Convenor AJKYF and BC Raina, Former Trade Unionist, Chairman RTI Cell, IFJP expressed their views. In the end, SS Khajuria Advocate and Executive Member AJKYF extended vote of thanks.
Tawi Andolan celebrated International Environment Day at Forest Information Centre, Bikram Chowk, Jammu. Prof Bhola Nath presented detailed information about historical and cultural background of river Tawi and its place in social life. World Famous Environmentalist Dr CM Sethi gave details about the measures being taken in other countries to meet out the challenge of Environment degradation and climate change. MP Rajya Sabha Shamsher Singh Manhas was the chief guest on the occasion. In the end, the vote of thanks was presented by Tawi Andolan Convenor Advocate Chander Mohan Sharma.
Social activist and Director in AVKKF Tarun Uppal in collaboration with J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat Employee Union planted trees in Secretariat assembly compound. Mukhtar Ahmed Wani, Rajeshwar Singh, Naqeeb Jeelani, Qayoom Bhat, Gulzaar Ahmed Dar, Ishant Sharma and other union members were also present on the occasion.
