SRINAGAR, Oct 30: Soccer kids in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) has kicked off a mega Grass-Root Level Football Festival for budding footballers of Under-10 and Under-13 boys at Polo Ground, here today. According to Fayaz Ahmad Sofi, Festival Chairman, the aim of the Festival is to take soccer to nooks and corners of the State as also to as many children as possible and focus on football's core values -sharing, learning, fair play and joy to reach out to youngsters in all of its affiliate Units.

Ex-Servicemen rally held

Poonch, Oct 30 : A veterans' rally was organised by the Balnoi Battalion under the aegis of Krishna Ghati brigade for the Servicemens of the area under ‘Operation Sadbhavana’. The aim of the event was to resolve the problems being faced by the veterans of the area.

The Officiating Commander, Krishna Ghati Brigade was the chief guest. He inaugurated the rally and medical camp in presence of Civil & Army Officials besides veterans and a large number of local people.

Speaking on the occasion, the Officiating Commander said that the Army would work to alleviate the problems of veterans and provide possible assistance to our valiant soldiers. He also dwelled upon the important role by the veterans towards overcoming the present turmoil in the State and he also impressed upon them, the need to encourage the youth of the area to remain in the mainstream.

A medical and dental check up was organised on the sidelines of the rally for the local populace. The specialist doctors including Surgeon, Gynecologist and Dentist from the Army and civil administration provided counseling and medical treatment. Nearly 368 men, 261 women and 158 children from villages around Balnoi were examined and treated.

Sports-cum-Cultural Mela concludes

POONCH, Oct 30: The 3-day Sports-Cum-Cultural Mela, organized jointly by Army, under Operation Sadhbhavana and Poonch District Administration concluded at Sports Stadium, here today.

Major General, I Narayana, GOC Romeo Force declared the Mela closed in a well attended function in presence of AK Sahu, District Development Commissioner Poonch.

Various teams participated in this Mela which was held on league cum knock-out basis from October 28, 2012.

Speaking on the occasion, Narayana said that the objective of the tournament, apart from channelising the energy of youth, was to bring Army and people closer. He expressed gratitude to the District Administration for making the event a grand success.

Prominent among others present on the occasion were Brig HS Shanbhag, Commander 6 Sector RR, Jahangir Mir, MLC Poonch, SSP Shamsheer Hussain, Padamshree Sambhunath Khajuria, Principal GDC Poonch, KL Sharma and retired Principal GDC Poonch, GL Sharma.

Pradeep Khanna conducted the proceedings of the programme.

JAMMU, Oct 30: Sub Regional Science Exhibition on the theme ‘Science and Society’ was organised in Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) No 2, Jammu Cantt, in which 13 schools from Jammu region and Akhnoor cluster participated.

On the occasion, BL Morodia, Assistant Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Jammu region, was the chief guest.

M Laxmi Narayan, Principal, KV No 2, presented the welcome address and threw light on the importance of organizing such exhibitions.

This is the 40th Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition conducted by NCERT at Sub Regional Level, Principal added.

While speaking, BL Morodia, encouraged the participants and hoped that as future citizens they will come forth with new and practical solutions for the betterment of society through scientific means.

Professors from Jammu University JP Singh, Prof Sambodh Kumar and Doctors from IIIM, Jammu, Dr Surjeet Singh, Dr Ravi Khajuria, Dr Subash Sharma and Dr Ashok Ahuja, were also present.

Earlier, in volleyball, RO Punjab trounced RO J&K, Headquarters Office defeated SRO Ludhiana, RO HP thrashed SRO Jallandhar, D(M)D got better of RO Faridabad and RO Faridabad prevailed upon RO J&K, while in cricket, RO Faridabad defeated Headquarters Office, RO HP outplayed RO J&K and RO Delhi trounced D(M)D.

In football, Headquarters Office defeated RO J&K, RO Delhi got better of D(M)D and RO HP thrashed RO Punjab.

Meanwhile in Round 3 of chess women, RO Chandigarh, RO Faridabad and RO HP scripted wins over RO J&K, Headquarters Office and D(M)D respectively.

In Round 3 of chess men, Headquarters Office drubbed SRO Ludhiana, RO Punjab got better of RO J&K, RO Faridabad prevailed upon RO HP, RO Delhi trounced SRO Ludhiana and D(M)D got better of RO Dehradun, while in Round 4 of chess men, Headquarters Office defeated RO Dehradun, D(M)D trounced RO Delhi, RO HP thrashed SRO Jallandhar, RO J&K got better of RO Faridabad and RO Chandigarh defeated SRO Ludhiana.

In carom women, Headquarters Office drubbed RO Delhi, SRO Ludhiana trounced RO J&K, SRO Ludhiana got better of RO HP, D(M)D trounced RO HP and Headquarters Office defeated RO Faridabad, while in carom men, RO Delhi got better of RO Faridabad, SRO Jallandhar defeated RO Faridabad, RO Chandigarh trounced RO Dehradun, Headquarters Office got better of RO Faridabad and SRO Ludhiana outplayed RO HP.

In table tennis men's singles, RO Chandigarh beat RO J&K, Headquarters Office got better of RO HP, SRO Ludhiana defeated RO Dehradun, SRO Jallandhar outclassed RO Delhi, Headquarters Office prevailed upon D(M)D, RO J&K trounced RO Faridabad, Headquarters Office defeated SRO Ludhiana and SRO Jallandhar got better of RO Faridabad.

Meanwhile, in table tennis women singles, RO Chandigarh thrashed RO Delhi, D(M)D got better of RO Punjab and RO HP defeated RO Faridabad.

The States and Cities of J&K, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jallandhar, Faridabad, Dehradun, Delhi and Headquarter Office, Delhi are participating in sporting extravaganza which is an annual feature of Employees' State Insurance Corporation.

Vanshita Rajput claimed gold in Under-17 girls 50 meters Butterfly event by clocking 1:32:49.

The Competitions were being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports under the overall supervision of Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports, while Tirath Ram, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu is the organizing secretary of the tournament.

Meanwhile, in Under-14 girls, Epista claimed double gold by winning 50 meters Breast Stroke and 100 meter Breast Stroke event, clocking 1:02:65 and 2:24:69 time respectively.

Stuti Kuthiala bagged 50 meter Free Style Under-14 girls gold, while Rohini Singh bagged 100 Breast Stroke Under-14 girls gold. 100 meter Free Style Under-14 girls went to Shriya, while Yatiksha clinched gold in 50 meter Free Style Under-14 girls.

In Under-19 girls, Sabia Nagpal bagged gold in 50 meter Free Style, Arshiya Kalra claimed gold in 50 meter Back Stroke, Bharpreet won 50 meter Breast Stroke gold, while 100 meter Free Style and 50 meter Free Style gold went to Sumedha Chaudhary and Sumedha Sharma respectively.

Extension Lecture held

Jammu, Oct 30 : An Extension lecture was held at Gandhi Memorial College of Education, Raipur, Bantalab, Jammu, on theatre and drama by one of India's best-known theatre actor/ director/ cultural activist Maharaj Krishna Raina.

The lecture was mesmerizing and very informative and greatly applauded by the Management members(HESK) staff and students of GMCEJ, it was followed by question/ Answer session. Raina laid stress on cultural diversity and said that, " when language dies by memory,ones cultural spine also goes".

Others who spoke on this occasion was President(HESK) Anil Dhar who highlighted M K Raina's contribution to Indian Theatre were Shri B.N Zutshi Educational Adviser(HESK) gave a brief life sketch of Shri Raina Principal Dr Bindu Verma welcomed the Chief Guest. Shri A.K Raina General Secretary(HESK),Shri Sanjay Dhar member(E.B ) were also present on this occasion .

Kehli Mandi bags hockey, football
titles in PYKKA Competitions

SAMBA, Oct 30: Block Kehli Mandi won football and hockey titles in the Inter-Block Competitions, under Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme at Higher Secondary School, Samba today.

Over 300 players drawn from various Panchayats of all four blocks of Samba, Vijaypur, Ghagwal and Vijaypur participated in the event of Under-16 boys and girls in the disciplines of kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, hockey, football, athletics, wrestling and wushu.

Vikram Singh Jamwal, Aditional Deputy Commissioner Samba was the chief guest on the valedictory function who distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up teams.

The Competitions were held under the overall supervision of Jarpal Singh, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Samba.

Meanwhile, in kabaddi boys, Dhamore Panchayat trounced Naran Panchayat in the final to win the title, while in kabaddi girls, Panchayat Sarai drubbed Patyari to lift the trophy.

In kho-kho girls, Ratwana Panchayat got better of Rajpura to win the trophy, while in volleyball girls, Ratwana prevailed upon Suchani to win the title.

Sunil, Bidhuri reach second round of
Senior Boxing Nationals

Hyderbad, Oct 30: Sunil Kumar of Railways and 2010 Youth National Championship bronze medallist Gaurav Bidhuri advanced to the second round of the 59th Sahara Men's National Boxing Championships which begin here today.

In a display of raw power and agility, the 34th National Games gold medallist, Sunil trounced Sajay Mishra of Madhya Pradesh in the light fly weight.

The 23-year-old hardly broke a sweat to get past Mishra in what was a clinical display of superlative boxing.

The nimble-footed Bidhuri too was in sublime touch, as he stormed past Netra Bahadur of Himachal Pradesh.

In the bantam weight, former national champion and Services boxer Chhote Lal Yadav avenged his 2011 National Championship loss against Maniknandan V of the Railways.

The 24-year-old put up a sterling performance against some solid attacking by the Railways boxer. Yadav established an early two point lead with the help of some heavy hitting and power punches (5-3).(PTI)

National Year of Mathematics inaugurated

JAMMU, Oct 30: Officiating Deputy Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Jammu Region, AS Gill inaugurated National Year of Mathematics (Regional Level), 2012 at KV No 1, here today.

Mathematic Projects selected out of the competitions held at Clusters Level were displayed for competitive event.

MCQ Test, Quiz Programme and Essay Writing Competitions were held on the occasion.

Teachers and students drawn from the Kendriya Vidyalayas of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir participated in the event.

The programme began with the lighting of ceremonial lamp by the chief guest, AS Gill and Dr Chitra Mishra, School Principal.

BL Morodia, Assistant Commissioner, TR Choudhary, Principal KV Sunjuwan and Meenakshi Jain, Principal KV DBN, Shikhar were the adjudicators of the event, while Raj Kumar and Sudha Gautam were the coordinators of the programme.

The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Princy.

Tiwary misses ton, takes India A to 369-9 against England

Mumbai, Oct 30: Manoj Tiwary staked his claims for a spot in the Indian Test team with a determined knock of 93 which helped India A recover from a wobbly start to reach 369 for nine on day one of the three-day game against the touring England cricket team here today.

Tiwary's feat came after opener Abhinav Mukund and comeback man Yuvraj Singh, also in the running for the no. 6 slot in the Indian squad, hit quick-fire half centuries after India A skipper Suresh Raina elected to bat after winning the toss at the Brabourne Stadium.

The Bengal captain, looking well-set for a deserving century, tried to play across against England's pacer Tim Bresnan and lost his stumps. He faced 150 balls and hit 11 fours in his 202-minute knock.

At stumps, R Vinay Kumar (25) and last man Parwinder Awana (11) were at the crease.

Tiwary, who came in at the fall of Raina's wicket with India A struggling at 140 for four, pulled the innings together after India A had lost two more wickets at 190 in 47 overs. The middle-order batsman put on a century partnership with Irfan Pathan who made 46 in 113 minutes.

The duo put on a stand of 110 for the seventh wicket in 168 balls, with Pathan striking five fours and two sixes, to take the team past the 300-mark.(PTI)

Grass-Root Football Festival commences

The Festival offers everyone the chance to play football without discrimination and without need for major infrastructure as per the instructions of FIFA to develop football from grass-root level.

Mohammad Shafi Nari former International player and Zahoor Ahmad Khan are the selector for this Festival, to pick players for the upcoming Festival at Kalayni, West Bengal.

Speaking on the occasion, Talat said that the sports person have always brought laurels to the State by their excellent performances in sports events. He said that the youth of the Valley are talented and efforts need to be put in for exploitation of their talent so that they can compete at National and International level.

Among others, Director, Youth Services and Sports, J P Singh, Inspector General of Police J&K Armed Police, Rouf-ul-Hassan, General Secretary, All India North Zone Kayaking and Canoeing Championship, Balbir Singh Khushwah, besides the sports persons from 12 states participated in the inaugural function.
