Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh lauded the VLCC’s initiative and said that the medical fraternity and Diabetes researchers over the world are today concerned not only about the rising prevalence of obesity but also ‘Central’ or abdominal obesity, which is an independent risk factor for a host of metabolic disorders including diabetes, hypertension and heart attack.
He made the startling disclosure that even in Jammu and surrounding areas, the prevalence of ‘Central Obesity’ was over 60% and almost equal in both men as well as women.
Expressing concern over the rising prevalence of obesity in children, adolescents and teenagers, Dr Jitendra said that the major challenge for India in the next 25 years will be obesity and diabetes in young, adolescents and children as well.
“VLCC can play an important role by educating the society through scientific cum cosmetic methods, which are attractive, inspiring and also effective”, Singh added.
Reema Gandotra informed the gathering about VLCC research, which reveals that waist circumstance-to-height Ratio (WHtR) is a better and more accurate screening tool as compared to Badly Mass Index (BMI) for identifying the risk of obesity related disorders at an early stage.
With every 0.01 increase in WHtR there is a gradual increase in body fat %, leading to an increase in the number of medical cases, both in case of males and females, she added.
