Vigyan Prasar, NCSTC organize workshop

JAMMU, Oct 18: A workshop cum seminar on Mathematics and Science Communication was organized by Vigyan Prasar and National Council for Science and Technology Communications (NCSTC) at Press Club, here today.
The workshop was the part of the programme initiated by Vigyan Prasar and NCSTC to promote mathematics among people. The programme is a part of the campaign to mark the 125th birth anniversary of great Indian mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan.
Arjun Sinha, Former Director, Vigyan Prasar gave a presentation on the importance of science and mathematics communication. Modern societies cannot ignore communicating science communication. No development is possible without knowledge and advances in mathematics, he said.
Prof Chander Shekhar from Mathematics Department, MAM College, gave a presentation on mathematics and everyday life, giving examples of how mathematics is an integral part of modern day life.
Naresh Kumar Jain, Mathematics teacher, said that teachers were responsible for students developing phobia for mathematics. He said they need dedicated teachers who teach concepts rather than concentrating on the method.
Journalist and Film-maker, YS Gill, gave a presentation on India’s contribution to mathematics. “We have a rich tradition of mathematics and some of the world’s greatest mathematicians were born in India”, he said adding, that it is a long list including Aryabhata, Bhaskara, Bhaskara II, Madhava, Srinivas Ramanujan, Chandrashekhar Subramanian and Harish Chandra.
Prof Zahu-ud-Din Zahur, Dr Ramesh Chander, Principal MAM College, BL Sher, Jagdish Raj Sharma, Principal, Government Higher Secondary School and Ratan Lal Bhagat, Scientist, Sericulture Department, Jammu, also expressed their views.
