VC Rai declares All India Inter-University Pencak Silat C’ship open

JAMMU, May 24: Professor Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu today declared open the All India Inter-University Pencak Silat (Men & Women) Championship, organized by Directorate of Sports and Physical Education at the University Gymnasium Hall.
In his address, Prof Rai said that under National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, sport is an integral part of the curriculum which earlier was an extracurricular activity. “It is a matter of honour that the Association of Indian Universities entrusted the responsibility to University of Jammu for hosting the All India Inter-University Pencak Silat (Men & Women) Championship in which around 450 players from 44 Universities across the nation are going to participate in this mega event,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Prof Rai also unveiled the mascot of the Pencak Silat Championship on the occasion.
Earlier, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education presented the formal welcome address and the detailed report of the said championship. He emphasised that sports and games impart a sense of discipline, fellow-feeling and togetherness.
During the opening day of the championship (Ganda female event), the team of Sonai and Simran (LPU) won Gold medal, Neha Rani and Sapna Kumari (GNDU Amritsar) secured silver and Manisha and Jamuna Bhai of (PU Punjab) clinched bronze, whereas Deepika Kumawat & Riya Kumawat (Madhav University Pindwara, Rajasthan) also won bronze medal.
In male event, the team of Sachit Sharma & Shubham Ruhela of (GNDU Amritsar), Rahul Saini & H. Bishan Metie of (LPU Punjab) and Aryan & Hanik Bawa of (PU Patiala) won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively, whereas Tarun Sharma & Bhupinder Singh (University of Jammu) also secured bronze medal.
In Tungal single (female), Simran (LPU Punjab), Neha Rani (GNDU Amritsar) and Aamina Bashir (University of Kashmir) clinched top three medals respectively, while Princess Thomas (Maharaja Syajirao University of Broda) also secured bronze medal.
In male event, Hardik Kale (CU Mohali), Abhishek Kumar Gutam (LPU Punjab) and Sarnaik Anuj Data Guru (GNDU Amritsar) won top three medals respectively, whereas Krishna Panchal (Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth Pune) also won bronze medal.
In Regu (male), Kumar Ananad, Abhishk Kumar & Shivam Singh (GNDU Amritsar), Raman Kumar, Abhi Ahuja & Deepak Kumar (PU Patiala) and Aman, Ajit Kumar Jat & Ashish Kumar Singh (LPU Punjab) secured top three medals respectively and Nitesh Kumar, Suraj Singh & Naman Kumar (PU Chandigarh) also clinched bronze medal.
An impressive demonstration of the various skills of the Pencak Silat was performed by the players.
Prof Prakash Antahal, Dean Students Welfare, DrVinod Bakshi, Irfan Aziz Botta, Gourav Arora, Dr Komal Nagar, Dr Mandeep Singh, Vimal Kishore, Padam Dev Singh, Jai Bharat, Vikas Karlopia, Ravish Vaid, Raj Kumar Bakshi, Gagan Kumar, Harinderpal Singh, Tarvinder Pal Singh, Bhavna Sharma, Sanjeev Sharma and representatives of the participating teams were also present on the occasion.
