SRINAGAR, Oct 2: Terming universities as repository of knowledge and information, Governor N N Vohra today impressed upon Kashmir University faculty to impart practical and value-based education and training to students and scholars to make them competent enough to face the challenges of tomorrow.
“Universities by their very definition and statutes are expected to be repository of knowledge and unless they are not able to transfer this knowledge and information to the society they are somehow failing in their duties and responsibility.
“Therefore, universities have to be proactive in their approach and make sure that the education which is being given to students and scholars provides them a global view on various aspects and problems of life,” Vohra said at a special convocation at Kashmir University.
The special convocation was organised to confer Doctor of Science upon Prof Goverdhan Mehta, National Research Professor at School of Chemistry in University of Hyderabad.
The Governor impressed upon faculty members of the University to impart such education to students which enhances their capacity to think and strengthens their capability in various academic and non-academic arenas.
“We need to ask ourselves whether the education which we are imparting to students and scholars is sufficient to train them to face the challenges of life,” he said.
“Prof Mehta has become the alumnus of this University now and we expect him to see that the interests of the University of Kashmir are promoted at various national and international levels in the field of Science and Technology,” he added.
Mehta said, “I had the opportunity to work with some of the students of Kashmir whom I supervised for M Phil and Ph D degrees and I must say that they are very brilliant and second to none in the world.” (AGENCIES)
