For University in Ladakh, students take out marches, Leh observes shutdown

LEH/JAMMU, Nov 1: Demanding full-fledged University in Ladakh, various student associations in Leh staged a peaceful protest here today under the banner of Student Organization of Unified Ladakh (SOUL).
The protesting students were supported by various religious organization and merchant association. All the business establishment also remained closed for half day in support of the students’ demand.

Expressing their deep anguish against Government for not granting University in Leh, student leaders appealed the Governor to open full-fledged university in the region. Terming it as a very unfortunate from the part of administration not granting permission to hold protest rally today, SOUL president Rigzin Dorjay said that they would continue to raise their demand for university in more effective manner in future.
All Ladakh Student Association Jammu (ALSAJ) president Lobzang Norbo said that more than 15 thousands Ladakhi students are studying in Jammu due to lack of good educational facilities here as the result students are facing various challenges and forced to stay away from home. Demanding a university in Ladakh, Lobzang said that there are seven universities each in Srinagar and Jammu but on the other side Ladakh with total area of 58 percent of J&K land area is left without any university.
Later the protesting students submitted a memorandum to the Governor through administration.

The memorandum reads that all the colleges in Ladakh are affiliated to Kashmir University and its inadvertent work culture amidst problems in Kashmir hugely affects the studies of students in Ladakh. “Student community makes up the 40 percent of the total population of Ladakh and a university in Ladakh has been its long cherished dream. We have been trying every possible way to seek Government intervention in the establishment of a university in Ladakh but no successive Government has taken any step in fulfilling our demands. The establishment of a full-fledged university in Ladakh would solve all the problems students have to face in the absence of a university. We seek your active intervention in establishing a full-fledged university in Ladakh,” the memorandum further reads.
Meanwhile in Jammu, students of Ladakh studying here, took out a massive protest demonstration demanding a university in Ladakh.
Carrying placards and banners, a large number of Ladakhi students assembled near the Jammu University campus and then marched towards Bikram Chowk in the form of a procession.
They were raising slogans in support of their demand. The protest march was also addressed by the student leaders, who gave reasons in support of their demand. They also vowed to continue the peaceful struggle till their demand is conceded by the Government.
