Srinagar, Jan 6: A top Al-Badr militant Muzzafar Ahmed Naikoo alias Muzza Molvi, was killed by the security forces after heavy exchange of fire in the wee hours today in Budgam district while militants targeted the house of Member Legislative Council in Shopian area of South Kashmir.
The Al-Badr militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Budgam district. Muzzafar Ahmed, who had links with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), was killed by the security forces after heavy exchange of fire in the wee hours today. He was wanted in several cases and was earlier associated with LeT. A policeman was also critically injured in the encounter.
Police said that he was involved in a number of militancy related activities. “Acting on a specific information about the presence of militants in Gulzarpora, Muchwa area, Budgam police along with 178-BN CRPF and 53, 55 RR cordoned off the area and launched the search operation. The militant lobbed a grenade on the joint search party, triggering an encounter. The encounter ended with the killing of an Al-Badr militant later identified as Muzaffer Naikoo alias Muzza Molvi son of Abdul Majeed Naikoo resident of Baghat, Sopore”, he said.
Sources said that Muzaffar joined militancy in 2007 and was arrested in 2009. He was released in 2009 and had re-joined the militancy same year.
Police said that in 2011, the militant was involved in many militancy related activities which included firing on Army and police party in Sopore in which a JCO was injured and killing of two sisters at Chinkipora Sopore on January 31.He was also involved in firing on the patrolling party at Bough-i-Sopore on March 21, killing of a civilian Shamas u din Peer at Chankhan, Sopore and injuring a civilian namely Firdous Ahmed Shiekh at Jalalabad, Sopore in that year.
In 2014 he was involved in the killing of a civilian Abid Akbar Wani at Krankshivan colony Sopore and also firing on the police party at Chankhan, Sopore on 7th of January in which an ASI Kareem Ahmed was martyred and three other policemen were injured. He was involved in killing of a civilian Waseem Ahmed Malla at Bagi-Islam Sopore on 21 February 2014.

An Al-Badar spokesman said that the militant was arrested and later killed. He warned that the outfit will target the security forces.
In the meantime, militants opened fire at the residence of an opposition National Conference MLC in Shopian district of South Kashmir today.
The house of MLC Showkat Ahmad Ganai at Chitrigam in Zainapora area of Shopian was attacked at 5:30 AM. The MLC is in Jammu for the ongoing Budget session of the State Legislature. No one has been hurt in the incident.
The militants fled from the spot after the security personnel deployed at the residence of the MLC returned the fire.
