Team inspects District Jail Udhampur, takes stock of facilities for inmates

JAMMU, June 4: On the direction of High Court, a three members committee headed by Tahir Khurshid Raina, Additional Session Jugde Doda, conducted the inspection of District Jail Udhampur and met the inmates.
Superintendent of the District Jail, Rajni Sehgal took the team into the barracks and different blocks of Jail and briefed the members about the facilities provided to the inmates there.
The team, comprising of Advocate lmtiyaz Mir and Advocate Joginder Kumar Goswami, expressed satisfaction over the logistics, health care, food and the drinking water provided to the inmates.
The detenues were individually interviewed by the members of team to know about the conduct of the Jail staff and the facilities provided to them. The sanitary conditions were found satisfactorily barring the bathrooms and toilets which needed immediate repairs.
The inmates complained about the irregularity of their being carried to the trial courts for hearings and also about the bad conditions of the vehicles carrying the detenues to the trial courts.
Some representations were also received from the under trials upon which quick action was assured. The sprawling cluster of the different blocks of Jail was found well maintained. The team appreciated the running of IGNOU Center inside the Jail where different detenues both under trials and convicts are being imparted education through distance mode. The Jail authorities were advised to improve upon the educational activities and also provide moral and reformative facilities as required under the Jail Manuals.
