BARAMULLA, Sept 24: Surjit Club crushed SAI North in the first semis today by 7-6 goals and sealed berth in the final of the ongoing Annual Senior District Hockey Championship, being organized by Hockey J&K at Government Degree College ground, here today.
In the first half of the match, Pawandeep Singh of SAI North raised the scorecard in 7th minute by “Own Goal”, whereas in the 23rd minute, Mohammad Hatim of SAI North with his excellent footwork netted the goal and brought the opponent Surjit Club under extreme pressure of 2-0 goals.
In the last minute of the first half, the players of Surjit Club tried their level best to score a single goal, but were restricted by the players of SAI North and the first half ended with 2-0 goals.
In the second half, the players of Surjit Club played mind games. Manjeet Singh of Surjit Club by netting a goal in the 38th minute, brought down the mounting pressure on his team-mates. In the 59th minute Harvinder Singh of Surjit Club scored the equalizer goal and brought the scorecard to 2-2 goals.
After the fourth goal of the match in the 59th minute, players of both the teams strived hard to raise the lead but failed and the second half ended with 2-2 goals each.
In tie-breakers, players of SAI North and Surjit Club netted three goals each out of five plenty kicks and the score-card climbed to 5-5 goals each.
However, in sudden death, Mohammad Hussain of SAI North netted the goal, while Jatinder Singh of Surjit Club also scored the goal and the score reached 6-6 goals.
In the second attempt, Robinder Singh of SAI North failed to score goal and this opportunity was pocketed by Surjit Club’s Harvinder Singh, who netted the goal and made his team to enter the final of the tournament.
On the occasion, Janak Singh Sodhi, president, Shrimoni Akali Dal, J&K was the chief guest, while as large number of people and sports lovers also thronged the ground to watch the match.
The match was officiated by Ranbir Singh, Avtar Singh, Harmeet Singh and Manjeet Singh (India).
In the second semis, Bikram Club will take on Singhpura Sports Club.
