LUCKNOW, Oct 1 : Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday stressed the need for students to understand the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom movement and develop the ability to articulate their views effectively.
Her remarks came on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri's birth anniversary, both observed on October 2.
Gandhi, a leader of India's freedom struggle, championed truth and non-violence, while Shastri was known for his simplicity, humility and commitment to public service.
Addressing students of Adarsh Madhyamik Vidyalaya at Jan Bhavan, Patel said, "Students should know when Gandhiji launched which movement, under what circumstances, what its objective was and what impact it had on the freedom movement."
She also said teachers should ensure that the students understand their subjects before delivering speeches, according to a statement issued from Jan Bhavan.
"Along with developing an understanding of the subject among students, their ability to present their views effectively should also be developed," she said.
Patel said Gandhi's life showed that determination, discipline and hard work could enable a person from an ordinary background to achieve great things. "If you want to progress in life, you will have to work hard," she said.
She also stressed the need for 100 per cent results and attendance in Class 10, asking teachers to identify weak students and arrange additional classes and special teaching for them. She called for regular health monitoring, training teachers in first aid and ensuring nutritious food and cleanliness at schools.
Emphasising Gandhi's focus on cleanliness, she urged students to maintain personal hygiene and keep their surroundings clean.
On the occasion, students spoke about Shastri's simple life, honesty, humility, discipline and sense of duty, the statement said. (PTI)
