LEH, Mar 18: Demanding conduct of examination on time, thousands of students studying in Government Degree College (GDC) Leh came out on road and blocked the vehicular movement.
Carrying pla cards and banners, the students alleged that Kashmir University has failed to conduct examination of any semester since their enrolment in the college in April last, which has resulted into loss of one year academic session.
The agitating students supported by Student Organization of Unified Ladakh (SOUL) and Ladakh Student Eco Cultural Saver (LSECS) alleged that Kashmir University is discriminating with the students of Leh Degree College, adding that KU’s failure to conduct examination on time will make the students to complete one academic session in two years.
The protesters appealed to the political leaders including Chief Minister to resolve their grievances at the earliest failing which they would intensified their protest.
SOUL President Tsewang Chosdon said “why we have to depend on KU. Put us under Jammu University as Kashmir is always facing problems”.
LSECS President Stanzin Thardoth alleged that KU is playing with the future of Ladakhi students and appealed to the political leaders to help them otherwise they will come out on street to raise their demands.
Responding to a query, College Principal Prof Dr GS Rakwal said that due to turmoil in Srinagar, Kashmir University couldn’t conduct the examination in August but when the situation was normal in November the first semester examination was conducted in Srinagar and University assured us to conduct the examination tentatively in Ladakh region in the first week of March. “As the road is closed, the examination in Ladakh region has not been conducted as the answers sheets and other stationeries are to be transported via road”, he added.
Terming the student’s demand as genuine, Principal stated that normally it should have been their third semester by this time but due to problems in Srinagar, examination of even single semester have not been conducted so far and in this regards he had discussed with Chief Executive Councillor Dr Sonam Dawa, who spoke to Vice Chancellor and VC gave assured for early conduct of the examinations.
