JAMMU, Jan 11: All J&K Oil and LPG Tank Truck Drivers Union today alleged that drivers and cleaners of hundreds of trucks stranded on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway are compelled to live in a sub-human condition due to lack of coordination between National Highway Authority of India and UT administration.
“The truck drivers are struck in the long traffic jam for 5 to 6 days and are without food and other basic facilities for days together but unfortunately the administration paid no heed towards their sufferings,” said Ranjit Singh Raina, president of All J&K Oil and LPG Tank Truck Drivers’ after concluding his 2-day visit to Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Union to assess the problems being faced by the truck drivers and cleaners.
Along with general secretary of the Union, Davinder Singh and members Sohan Singh, Rajinder Singh and Harasis Singh, Raina visited visited Kud – Batote Road stretch of the Highway during the 2-day tour and found that there was long queues of oil tankers, trucks and other heavy vehicles due to snow and closure of the highway.
He said other than the weather the apathy of the Government is main reason for which these drivers are compelled to live in a sub-human condition. “These drivers are also very much part of the society and they performed very important duty of transporting essential commodities from one part of the country to another but the Government and others agencies consider these drivers as non human,” he added.
Raina said that a full report is being drafted by the Union regarding Jammu-Srinagar national highway which shall be submitted to J&K LG, Union Minister for Roads & Transport Nitin Gadkari and other stake holders.
