Sports Council makes dope tests mandatory to preserve sanctity

JAMMU, Jan 29: To encourage the deserving sportspersons and raise their morale, besides preserving sanctity in sports and games, the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has issued a circular to all its affiliate units (recognised Sports Associations) with regard to conduct of dope tests prior to the participation of teams in domestic and national level tournaments.
“It is has been observed that the sportspersons using anabolic steroids and other banned substances have more physical endurance and strength, which creates an edge for them against those who are not using such substances, thus are ousted from the competitions and deprived of various incentives of J&K Government,” said the circular.
It further said that although there is National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) which conducts the dope tests to curb the menace of doping in sports to promote fair paly in national level competitions, yet there are reported instances that the sportspersons using steroids are escaping from the dope tests for participation in the competitions held at domestic level.
The Sports Council has served strict instructions to the recognised Sports Associations for promoting fairness and ethics in sports and take steps to check malpractice of doping in sports.
The Council has directed the Associations to educate sportspersons, coaches and parents about the harmful effects of dope substances and ensure anti dope tests are regularly conducted before domestic and national level competitions in accordance with the guidelines of NADA.
