Srinagar, Mar 6: Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura has gained trial access to the DELNET-Developing Library Network, New Delhi and has asked all its doctors and scholars to avail the facility by accessing the available resources and other facilities under the library network.
DELNET is a significant resource-sharing library network in the country that links more than 7700 institutions, including universities, colleges, R&D organisations, and hospitals, across India and a few other countries.
The main objectives of the network, SKIMS said, is to promote resource sharing among the Member-Libraries by collecting, storing and disseminating information and by offering networked library services to users.
“Its objectives include carrying out research in the field of information science and technology, providing technical assistance to Member-Libraries, coordinating efforts for the establishment of a suitable collection, facilitating and promoting inter-library loans and document delivery, etc. The Discovery Portal, Knowledge Gainer Portal, and Vision Portal were also created by DELNET (Video Lectures),” officials said.
The library network’s goal is to create a specialised bibliographic database of books, serials, and non-book resources, as well as project, specialist, and institution databases. The DELNET’s major goal, according to administrators, is to collaborate with other regional, national, and international networks and libraries for the exchange of information and documents, which they say is critical in information dissemination.
The administrators said that providing trial access to DELNET online services to SKIMS, Soura is a crucial occasion for academics and medical research in the hospital.
“The platform provides an option to access the resources which are remotely available and that holds the key because a resource available somewhere else, remains available everywhere—and that’s why it is called a library network,” the officials said.
The officials said that the trial access will remain active till March 16, 2023, and till then all the Faculty members, Resident doctors, Research Scholars, and other students have been asked to access the valuable resources and services available under DELNET and provide feedback about the same.
Notably, DELNET is located on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and operates under the motto: “Networking Libraries, Sharing and Spreading Knowledge” and has been doing so for more than 30 years. It was awarded the renowned IIPA Award for Excellence in Public Services in 2020.
