Shutdown in Kishtwar, SW terminated

KISHTWAR, Aug 27: A complete shutdown was observed peacefully in Kishtwar town today on a joint call by Majlis-e-Shura and Sanatan Dharam Sabha to protest against the alleged rape and death of a minor tribal girl.

It is pertinent to mention here that in this case Police has registered an FIR under provisions of BNS pertaining to rape and death caused by miscarriage, among other offences, besides the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and arrested five persons including the main accused Khalid Ahmed Sheikh, a Grade-II teacher and in-charge headmaster of Middle School Bumalpora in Inderwal along with his brother.

Meanwhile, as per an order, Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar terminated the services of Farooq Ahmed, HDF Sanitation Worker. He is one of the accused in the case and is presently cooling heels behind the bars.

Due to the shutdown, shops, business establishments, educational institutions remained shut while very thin vehicular movement was seen on the roads.

Adequate deployment of security forces and cops was made at many places especially in the sensitive zones of Kishtwar and Chatroo to maintain peace.

The protesters took out a rally at Chatroo and raised slogans demanding exemplary punishment to all the accused persons involved in outraging the modesty of the minor girl.

Bandh was also observed in Drabshalla, Wardan, Marwah and other adjoining areas of Kishtwar town.

However, as it is the festival of Rakshabandhan tomorrow, some shops in the area opened after 11 am so that the people can make purchases for the festival.

The minor tribal girl was repeatedly assaulted sexually by her teacher at her school over months resulting in her pregnancy. She later on died following an alleged attempt to terminate the pregnancy in Chatroo.

A Special Investigation Team is probing the case.
