LEH, Oct 1: Thousands of Muslims observed Ashura by carrying out mourning rituals during a procession which commenced from Imamia Jama Masjid Chukey Rantak and after passing through various markets culminated at Imam Bada here.
To mark the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram and to mourn the killing of Imam Hussain at Karbala in Iraq, Shia Muslims holding black flags and wearing black clothes observed “Maatam” by beating their chests. The procession was organised by Seerat Committee Majlis Hussaini Leh Town.
Addressing the large gathering at Jama Masjid Leh, Anjuman Imamiya president, Ashraf Ali Barcha said that today is the day to do an introspection to judge oneself what contribution one can make towards the society. He added that those who become too much materialistic are doing it against the wishes of Hussian and if one really want to keep Hussain alive then one must follow his advices, Ashraf, added.
Anjuman Moin-Ul Islam, president Dr. Abdul Qayoom and many Ulmas also addressed the gathering to convey the message of Imam Hussain.
During the procession, Health Department staff provided medical assistance to bleeding devotees. Various medical camps were also set up enroute to help the bleeding devotees. Elaborate security arrangements were made to avoid any untoward incident.
Health Department in collaboration with Anjuman Imamiya Youth wing organised a blood donation camp.
