JAMMU, June1: State unit of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) organized a function at Narwal Pain here to observe 42nd Shahidi Divas of Bhagat Amarnath here today.
State president of the party, Tulsi Dass Langeh while paying tributes to Shaheed Amar Nath recalled his contributions for the community. He said though reservation for SC/STs commenced in the country after 1950, but the same was not implemented in J&K having its separate constitution. Ex-MLA Babu Milkhi Ram started struggle for it in J&K and later Bhagat Amar Nath joined the struggle and started hunger strike at New Secretariat Park for seeking justice. He sacrificed his life for the cause of the community on June 1, 1970.
Thereafter, under SRO- 272 of 1972, reservation for SCs/STs commenced in the State. He said due to efforts of this great hero, the youth of this community are enjoying benefits of reservation.
Several other leaders also paid tributes and spoke on the occasion. Prominent among them included M L Chargotra, Rattan K Bhagat, Som Nath Ex-MLA, Dr Harjit, T R Bhagat Badri Nath and Mohinder Kashyap.
