NEW DELHI, Sept 26: To discuss the rehabilitation of flood affected people in Jammu and Kashmir, a brainstorming session was organized at the IICC, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
The major objective of the seminar was to take stock of on-going relief operations particularly with regard to supply of livelihood support services including medicines, clothing and material for shelter and to evolve an unified and coordinated approach to restore the normal life through operationalization of institutions namely, schools, hospitals, business establishments, tourism-related activity etc.
A large number eminent persons and experts who have knowledge and experience of working in the J&K, participated in the seminar, which was organized by Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Bhan.
The participants agreed to launch a website which would inter-alia provide detailed information relating to the credible NGOs engaged in relief work, availability/deficiency of material at different locations and other related information.
They also felt the need for constitution of an independent group of experts who would take stock of the present situation of relief work, assess needs of people /region through intensive and extensive consultation and suggest remedial measures for effective delivery of support services and for reconstruction of economic infrastructure, which are sine quo non for speedy development of the State.
They impressed upon the need to mobilize adequate physical and financial resources from alternative sources for reconstruction of the State economy and suggested that corporate sector should be approached to provide support for various socio-economic activities under the CSR scheme;
The participants were of the opinion that the political process of formation of the government through democratic process of election in the State should be completed on time.
Those who took part in discussion, included former Governor A R Kohli, Lt Gen Syed Ata Hussain, Wajahat Habibullah, A S Dulat, Kapil Kak, Khalid Jahangir, M M Ansari, Riyaz Punjabi, Iftekhar Gilani, Sunil Dang, Som Pal, Muzaffar Shah, Ajay Bharti, Dilip Padgaonkar, Siddiq Wahid and others.
