SRINAGAR, Oct 3:Army’s Special Forces today conducted searches inside the Army’s battalion headquarter in Baramulla to ensure that no militant managed to sneak inside the camp after they foiled Fidayeen attack last night. Border Security Forces (BSF) today said that security forces are alert to foil such attacks while militants snatched five rifles from police guards in South Kashmir this evening.
The security forces recovered one GPS, one compass, one wire cutter and one AK magazine with few rounds from river Jhelum bank that was left behind by the fleeing militants during the searches.
The searches around and inside the camp were carried out at first light after entire area was put under tight cordon during the night.
Additional Director General of Border Security Force, Arun Kumar, while giving details of the attack today on the sidelines of wreath laying ceremony of a BSF jawan told reporters here: “Our one company is deployed in Baramulla and it is stationed inside the Army camp at Janbazpora Baramulla. There are several bunkers and BSF is manning 4 bunkers.”
Kumar said that BSF men saw suspicious movement of militants and they challenged them leading to a gun battle in which one jawan was killed and another injured. “These two BSF men were guarding a bunker and they saw suspicious movement of militants and challenged them. Militants fired at them and they responded to their fire. They (militants) then attacked the bunker by firing a grenade at it. It is at that time when the two BSF men came out of the bunker. One of jawan was hit by a grenade and he was critically injured”, he said.
“Our boys said that they have seen two militants ducking as they opened fire on them. And later during the searches we recovered One GPS, one compass, one wire cutter and one AK magazine with few rounds from the banks of river Jhelum adjacent to the Army camp. During the night when our jawans were injured, they (militants) must have fled from behind taking cover of the darkness”, said the ADG BSF.
Kumar said that security forces are alert to prevent such type of attacks. “There may be militant presence at few places and they may be trying to carry out attack but we are alert. The greatest thing is that our jawans have sacrificed their lives to prevent militants from entering the camp. They have done excellent job by risking their lives”, he said.
The ADG BSF said that these militants were trying to carry out Uri type of attack by sneaking inside the camp. “They were carrying the wire cutter to cut the fence and enter the camp and carrying out attack just like that in Uri”, he added.
SSP Imtiyaz Hussain said today that the militants used civilians as shield and therefore security forces were unable to retaliate properly.
Hussain said that as it was a civilian area, the Army couldn’t retaliate effectively due to apprehension of civilian casualties in the dark, resulting in the escape of the militants. “They used civilians as shield as it was a civilian area, we could not retaliate properly and they fled. Militants managed to escape as it was dark and Army couldn’t retaliate effectively due to apprehension of civilian casualty”, he said.
Militants this evening snatched 5 SLRs from police guards deployed for the security of minority community at Samnoo village in Damhal Hanjipora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Senior police and Army officials reached the spot and massive manhunt was launched to nab the militants responsible for weapon snatching.
The police guards have been detained and they are being questioned.
