Restrictions in parts of Srinagar, strike paralyses life

Srinagar, Jan 28: Authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to prevent violence during separatist called strike and protests against the killing of two protesters in Army firing in Shopian yesterday. Click here to watch video
Two protesters were killed and eight others injured after Army opened fire on protesters in Ganowpora village of Shopian district on Saturday.
Contingents of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were heavily deployed in the old city areas of Srinagar to enforce the restrictions imposed by District Magistrate Srinagar in Police Station areas of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta and M R Gunj in Srinagar. Partial restrictions were also imposed in Police Station areas of Maisuma and Kralkhud.
Police and CRPF personnel had erected iron barricades and coils of concertina wire were used to block movement of vehicles and people in these areas.
Police and CRPF were also deployed in other parts of Srinagar city to prevent any violence during the strike.
Normal life remained paralysed due to strike called by separatists against the killing of two protesters in Shopian. Shops and business establishments were mainly closed and traffic was off the roads.  However, private vehicles were plying in some areas.
Rail services between Baramulla and Banihal towns were also suspended as a precautionary measure and they will remain suspended tomorrow as well.
The High Speed Internet was slowed down across Kashmir last evening but was restored this evening in rest of the Valley except South Kashmir. The internet providers were asked to slow down High Speed Internet and they moved 4G speed to 2G, which was also erractic at places.
In the meantime, Jammu and Kashmir Police booked an Army unit on murder and ‘attempt to murder’ charges over the shooting of two civilians in Shopian yesterday.
The charges of murder and ‘attempt to murder’ have been invoked against the Army in an FIR registered at a police station in Shopian. The FIR has been registered under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 336 (endangering life). Army Major Aditya of 10 Garwal and his unit has been named in the FIR.
And three persons working in an orchard in Chermarg village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district were injured in a mysterious blast today.
The injured, identified as Ghulam Nabi, 55, Zubair, 18 and Umar Farooq, 19, were shifted to District Hospital Anantnag for treatment.
They were digging their orchard when there was an expolsion in which they were injured. Police has taken cognizance into the matter and the nature of explosion is being ascertained.
