JAMMU, June 4: Social activist and former Sarpanch from Chatha area Gurmeet Kour has demanded that Government must reserve five seats for miniority Sikh community in Jammu and Kashmir.
While talking to media-persons here today, Gurmeet referred to the delimitation process being initiated by the Government in Jammu and Kashmir. She strongly demanded that five seats of J&K Assembly must be reserved for Sikh community which have a sizeable population in J&K.
She said Sikh community has made many sacrifices in the history of Independence of India but still never given the due representation in the J&K Assembly. She appealed to Central Govt to reserve atleast five (5) seats to Sikh community during Delimitation exercise and address political aspirations of this neglected community.
Gurmeet said J&K is now a Union Territory and Minority Commission may be implemented in the J&K UT like other states and UTs. With this, children of minority Sikh community may get benefits in jobs, education and all other schemes of the Central Govt made particularly for the minorities. As being the minority community in J&K, Sikhs are deprived of all these benefits till now, therefore, Govt must address their long pending demand, she added.
Prominent among others present included, Inderjeet Singh, Man Singh, Sarwan Singh, Amarjeet Sing, Baldev Singh, Ayaa Singh and Gurcharan Singh.
