Reports suggest British PM is preparing to step down

MOSCOW, May 17: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign voluntarily, claimed Daily Mail columnist Dan Hodges citing government sources.

Earlier, nearly 100 British parliamentarians called for Starmer’s resignation following the Labour Party’s defeat in local elections. The Financial Times reported on Friday citing sources that British officials feared a power struggle within the ruling Labour Party could paralyse the functioning of the government’s work.

“Keir Starmer has told friends he intends to stand down as Prime Minister and set out an orderly timetable for his departure,” the columnist said on X.

According to an unnamed UK cabinet member interviewed by Hodges, Starmer understands the political situation in the country, but he wants to leave his post “with dignity.”

It remains unclear exactly when this announcement will be made, Hodges noted in his article.

According to The Telegraph, Starmer may resign and hand over his post to Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham if he wins the Makerfield by-election.
