The theme is ‘Eyes on Diabetes’ and during this campaign, camp is highlighting the availability of this important service to all diabetics in the region and aims to raise awareness of the effects of diabetic retinopathy for those whose condition develops undetected.
Elaborating about the program, SK Sawhney, president, Rotary Club of Jammu and Dr Sanjay Sachdeva, project director for Diabetic Retina Screen, said that objective of the program is to reduce the risk of sight loss from diabetic retinopathy.
“Till date Diabetic Retina Screen has invited over 500 people with diabetes to attend free screening (using specialized digital photography) at a local screening centre. Anyone having Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes with age over 12 and over can find out if he is at risk or not by registering with us”, they said, adding, those who get registered will be invited time to time to attend free screening at a local screening centre.
Dr Sachdeva said, “All people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, which may not have any symptoms and may not affect the sight until the condition is at an advanced stage. Regular eye screening using special digital photography can detect the condition at an early stage before any noticeable symptoms or changes in sight”.
He said that any recommended follow-up investigation or treatment of diabetic retinopathy will be quality assured and provided free of cost to BPLs and on nominal reduced charges to APLs as part of the program.
