Reforms in primary education

Sir,
The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s assertion that primary and nursery education is the focal point of education system is welcome. This recognition  at official level has been long overdue. School education has suffered immensely in recent years in the State due to various reasons including neglect, conflict and immense focus on higher education without ensuring quality at basic school education level. Even national level schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan have failed to deliver. The shape of school education in Govt schools is dismal and schools cut a sorry figure in terms of methods of teaching and academic results. The fate of Government schools  in the remote rural areas is something that would put anybody to shame. Many matriculate level students from these Govt schools can barely write a correct sentence in any language. Survey after survey has shown high rate of school drop-outs, even SSA scheme failed to reduce it. And that can be a yardstick of the deplorable condition of primary schools.
Successive  Govts failed to bring the Govt schools at par with the far better private schools. The field has been left free for political beings to resort to cheap gimmicks in opening hordes of colleges primarily with an eye on vote bank. An impressive number of higher educational institutions many of which are operating in shabby and congested buildings without  the requisite infrastructure and equipment can never produce good education for many, which has to be ensured at the school level.
If the Chief-Minister is able to open up model primary and nursery schools in every district as assured, it would be a good start towards improving the condition of these schools.
Yours etc….
