Ramzan terms ASRTU backbone of surface transport

SRINAGAR, June 27: Terming Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU) as the backbone of surface transport, Minister for Transport and CA&PD Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan said that it provides mobility for the urban and rural population across the country and State as well.
The Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of a 2-day 235th Standing Committee meet (Supplies & Contracts) organized by State Road Transport Corporation in collaboration with Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), New Delhi at  SKICC today.
Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU) came into existence on August 13, 1965 to bring together all the State Road Transport Undertakings on a common platform with the aim of pooling their resources and knowhow for dealing with various problems faced by them and help them to improve their performance. It consists of various members and associate members.
The Minister said ASRTU plays an important role in promoting affordable mode of public transport to sizeable population of the country.
Ch Ramzan said that the commuters of the State crave to travel on SRTC buses as the drivers of the organization are more technically and professionally trained than their counterparts. He said the trucks (load Carriers) of the organization are also used for ferrying essential commodities in and outside the State.
The Minister highlighted the need for formulation of Transport Policy and Road Safety Policy for traffic regulation.  He said that State Government is working for providing more teeth to existing State Motor Vehicle Act.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary, Transport, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo said that surface road transport significantly promotes trade and commerce activities in the country. He said quality work, commitment, dedication and punctuality will make State Road Transport Undertakings self-sustaining.
Secretary, Haryana Roadways Transport Undertaking Dr Arun Kumar suggested for constitution of Inter-State Traffic Coordination Committee for recommending suitable traffic timing so that better transport facilities are be provided to the citizens of the country.
Executive Director, ASRTU P S Anand Rao said that the innovative and the best products produced by automobile manufacturers industry could provide sustainable transport and improve public transport scenario in the country. The association is also working on specifications of buses particularly meant for plying in rural areas.
Among others, Chairman, Standing Committee and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation V Babu, Managing Director J&K SRTC, J S Tandon, Director Technical, ASTRU, S K Patra and executive directors from various States Road Transport Undertakings across the country were present.
