Rajasthan Royals slams & blocks user for directing racist abuse towards player

NEW DELHI, June 16: IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday claimed that they reported and blocked a Twitter user for directing racist abuse towards an RR player in a reply to one of their tweets yesterday.

While RR chose to not name the player, against whom the racist abuse was directed, they took their official Twitter handle to clear their stand on racism and said that diversity was integral to the IPL franchise.

“We spotted a highly objectionable & disturbing tweet directing racist abuse towards our player in a reply to one of our tweets yesterday. We reported & blocked the individual immediately. Diversity is integral to Rajasthan Royals. Racism will NOT be tolerated,” Rajasthan Royals tweeted.

The death of an African-American named George Floyd after a white policeman knelt on his neck for long in the United States has caused of a global furore and athletes came out in numbers to raise their voice against racism based on the colour of the skin.

Many international cricketers have expressed their horrific incidents when they were subject to racial abuse. In this regard, few West Indies players have come forward such as Daren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and the likes.

While Gayle has made it clear that racism is a part of cricket, and not only confined to football, Sammy said he had been subjected to racism while playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, however, at that time, he did not understand what those racial barbs directed at him meant.  (UNI)
