RAJOURI, Apr 3: A large number of people including women held strong protest demonstration against the encroachment on nearly 3 kanal Government land by some people at Thannamandi today.
Reports said that a family managed to get the land allotted illegally with the connivance of some local Revenue officials several years ago. They had also then tried to raise fencing but there was strong public protest and they stayed away as this EP land was being used as ‘Zanaza Gah’ by the locals for performing last rites of the dead.
Today again that family tried to raise construction on this piece of land falling under Khasra No. 768. The people in large number came out there and they raised protest. They made the labours and others to run away from the site. Later, they moved to the ‘Shahdara Sharief Chowk’ and sat on dharna. Many women of the locality also joined the protest. The movement of vehicles remained suspended for several hours.
Later, SDPO Thannamandi Iftikhar Talib reached there and assured the people to hold inquiry into the matter. The people demanded that case be registered against the Revenue officials who made this illegal allotment. Later, on the assurance of SDPO people lifted dharna.
