LEH, Sept 1: Tsewang Dorjey, the President of People’s Action Group for Inclusion and Rights (PAGIR), had a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) at Raj Niwas in Leh.
Also present were key officials including Secretary to LG, Ravinder Kumar; Deputy Secretary, GAD, Sonam Chhosdon; and OSD to Commissioner Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Stanzin Shakya.
During the meeting, Dorjey briefed the LG about PAGIR’s mission, which focuses on advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwDs) from Ladakh, enabling them to actively participate in societal development.
He brought forth several pressing issues concerning PwDs including establishment of a Central Disability Rehabilitation Centre (CDRC) at SNM Hospital in Leh, activation of District-level Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRC) in Leh and Kargil, pension support for approximately 300 PwDs from Ladakh, and the requirement for approval of UT Ladakh Disability Rules by the Central Government.
Impressed by PAGIR’s dedication, the LG commended their efforts on behalf of PwDs and suggested Dorjey meet with the Commissioner Secretary of the Social Welfare Department to discuss necessary actions.
In another meeting, a delegation from Kungyam, led by Naib Sarpanch Tashi Paldan, approached the LG at Raj Niwas. Paldan requested a re-evaluation of a survey conducted for establishing a Community Development (CD) Block at Himya in the Rong Churgyud area, instead of Chumathang.
He explained that the current block headquarters at Chumathang is situated 60 km away, posing difficulties for residents to interact with Government officials about their concerns. Paldan emphasized that Himya, being centrally located, is a more suitable choice for the CD Block headquarters.
In response, the LG expressed his commitment to ensuring that Ladakh’s citizens don’t have to travel long distances to engage with Government officials regarding their issues.
He proposed forming a committee consisting of relevant officials and stakeholders to re-evaluate the matter and promised to take necessary measures to facilitate the affected people of the area.
