Police pays tribute to jawans were martyred in Srinagar militant attack

SRINAGAR: Police on Friday paid floral tributes to two policemen were martyred in a militant attack on a naka party on Nowgam bypass in Srinagar.

A police official said the wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Line (DPL) Srinagar to honour the valour of the jawans — identified as Ashfaq Ayub and Fayaz Ahmad — who were martyred when militants attacked a naka party from a narrow bylane at Gulshan Nagar Nowgam bypass.

“Director General of Police (DGP), J&K, Dilbag Singh, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar, and all ranks paid homage to the policemen during the wreath laying ceremony,” he said.

They said the mortal remains of the deceased will be sent to their native places for last rites.

Official sources said that two militants suddenly appeared from a narrow bylane at Gulshan Nagar Nowgam bypass at 0945 hrs and resorted to indiscriminate firing towards a joint naka party of police and Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF).   They said three police personnel were injured in the attack. “The policemen were rushed to a local hospital where two of them succumbed,” they said.

They said the health condition of the injured jawan, identified as Mohammad Ashraf, is stated to be stable. (agencies)
