Srinagar, Dec 30: Dozens of agitating Panchayat coordinators were injured today when police charged batons on them during their protest against the Government for not releasing their remuneration for the last two years.
Hundreds of Panchayat coordinators called Preraks assembled this afternoon at Partap Park on Residency Road in Srinagar carrying placards with anti-Government slogans inscribed on them.
Police contingent deployed on the road thrashed the protestors, including women, in which dozens of them were injured.
“Our remuneration has not been released for the last two years by the Government despite our dedicated work during this time. Today, we had come to raise our voice so that the authorities will wake from their slumber,” said Zahoor Ahmad, a protesting prerak.
At least 50 protestors, including women, were bundled into the police vans and taken to nearby Kothibagh Police Station.
The Government had hired about 7,000 Preraks in the Valley in 2011 on a monthly remuneration of Rs. 2000 to carry out a survey in rural areas to count the number of illiterate and drop-outs who were to be educated later.
