Srinagar, May 23: Police today booked two persons for allegedly assaulting a doctor inside District Hospital Pulwama, leaving him with serious head injuries that required eight stitches.
Police Station Pulwama registered an FIR under No. 96/2026 under Section 121 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Tariq Ahmad Khanday and Shariq Ahmad Khanday, sons of Ghulam Qadir Khanday and residents of Uthmullah Nikas Pulwama, officials said, adding that investigation into the case has been taken up.
The injured doctor was identified as Dr Omar Khan, a medical officer posted in the hospital’s Outpatient Department (OPD).
A security guard was also injured during the altercation, officials said.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 5:30 pm (on Friday) when the accused allegedly approached the doctor seeking examination of a patient as he was leaving after completing his duties.
Officials said Dr Khan, who had already worked nearly one-and-a-half hours beyond his scheduled duty hours, advised them to take the patient to the casualty wing where four doctors were on duty.
Officials alleged that one of the attendants lifted a steel bench from the hospital corridor and hurled it at the doctor.
The iron portion of the bench struck Dr Khan on the forehead, causing serious injuries.
Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Pulwama, Dr Abdul Gani Dar, said police have taken cognisance of the incident and recorded statements of witnesses.
