JAMMU, Mar 30: Demanding their one time settlement, displaced refugee families from Pak occupied areas of Jammu and Kashmir organized a peaceful protest demonstration  near the Press Club Jammu, here today.
Shouting slogans in support of their demands and carrying placards, they criticized the State Government for not rehabilitating them even after decades since they were forced to flee from their homes and hearths in PoK.
A number of women took part in the protest dharna, which was organized under the banner of PoK Refugee Front 1947, 1965, 1971.
The protesting refugees were also demanding adequate compensation, financial assistance, quota to their wards in professional and technical education besides Government jobs,   regulation of refugee localities, reservation in State Assembly, registration of left-out families, etc.
The demonstration was addressed by Capt Yudhvir Singh and Rachhpal Singh Chib who alleged that the State Government was intentionally ignoring plights of the refugees, who were living a pathetic life in Jammu and Kashmir since they got displaced from PoK.
Alleging that the Coalition Government of National Conference and Congress was adopting oppressive measures to thwart the refugees’ struggle for one-time settlement, they reminded the promises made with the displaced community.
“Despite Central Government’s package of Rs 112 crore for the refugees in 2000 and Rs 25000 to each non-camp refugee family of 1965, the State Government did not disburse the relief till date,” they rued and asked the refugees to remain prepared for a struggle to get their right.
