PM scholarship: expelled students protest

SRINAGAR, Feb 6: At least 23 Kashmir students, who were pursing higher education under Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme in Rajasthan, today staged a protest in the Press Enclave here, as the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) was yet to decide whether these students are eligible for Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) or not.
The students pursuing Bachelor of Pharmacy at Shekhawati College of Pharmacy have been evicted from the campus and hostel after the payment from the PMSSS wasn’t released by HRD Ministry.
After their non-payment of fees and hostel expenses, the college authorities have expelled all the 23 students from the college.
“In September 2012, we submitted all our documents and forms through a Kashmir NGO along with the affidavit certifying that we have not availed any other scholarship. We were promised full scholarship as we are from Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and we fulfilled the criteria required for the same. We were shocked when College authorities stopped us from attending the classes and directed us to leave the College,” Ayaz Farooq, one of the students said, adding, “We were admitted in the college on September 25 last year, but no disbursement on scholarship was made by MHRD, so the college authorities has asked us to leave the college.”
