VARANASI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi was cancelled today due to heavy rain.
The programme had to be cancelled hours before his arrival, district authorities said. The city was experiencing rains since last evening and this morning, heavy rains were witnessed even though the places where the Prime Minister was expected to visit have turned into a fortress with security men taking control of the spots.
BJP leaders here said weather has again played a spoilsport in the PM’s programme, as incessant rains since last night has thrown life out of gear in Varanasi. On June 28 last, Mr Modi had to cancel his visit to Varanasi at the last moment due to heavy rains.
The weather office here too has predicted widespread rains during the next 24 hours in the city and its adjoining areas.
The Prime Minister was slated to address a public meeting at the Diseal Locomotive Works(DLW) grounds where a waterproof tent has been erected which can accommodate around 30,000 people. But still waterlogging was witnessed at the the meeting spot.
During his visit to the holy city, the Prime Minister was expected to inaugurate a trauma centre at the Banaras Hindu University. This was the third time that the inauguration of the Trauma Center was cancelled.
Mr Modi was also scheduled to lay the foundation stone for ring road and kick-start the Integrated Power Development Scheme. Mr Modi was also scheduled to meet some dignitaries and prominent people of his constituency, along with some representatives of few NGOs at the airport’s VVIP lounge and before flying back to New Delhi.
This was the third time that PM had to cancel his Varanasi visit due to bad weather. The first time he cancelled was on October 14, 2014 due to Hudhud cyclone and then on June 28. (AGENCIES)
