MENDHAR, June 11: Residents of Ari and adjoining areas held massive protest demonstration against PHE authorities for water crisis and blocked Mendhar-Surankot road for over four hours today.
Reports said at around 6.30 am, the people from Ari and surrounding areas came out on the road and raised barricades. They stopped the movement of vehicular traffic and sat on dharna on the road.
Irate villagers started raising slogans against the PHE authorities Mendhar for their failure to provide drinking water to this entire belt. They alleged that temporary staff deployed was not performing duty properly. Most of them run their own business at Mendhar, some drive Tata Sumos etc. They only go to get their wages while they hardly bother to work on pumping stations or other locations to ensure supply of water. Concerned JE and even the AEE were told about the plight of the people but they too, turned a deaf ear towards the problem.
As a large number of vehicles remained stranded there on the road, the police party from Mendhar and SDM Ranjit Singh rushed to the spot at around 10 am. Balraj Sharma and Mohd Hanief who were leading the protest told the SDM about the entire issue and demanded shifting of the entire staff from the area including JE. They said that alternate tanker supply be ensured and seniors should ensure that workers deployed in the area are properly performing their duty. It is due to lack of supervision that temporary/ contractual staff hardly bothers about their job and people go high and dry during these hot summer days. On the assurance of the SDM, the people lifted dharna at around 10.30 am.
