Pensioners, senior citizens hold conference, discuss demands

SRINAGAR, June 15: Jammu & Kashmir Pensioners and Senior Citizens Civil Society held a one day conference at Ganderbal in which various issues confronting the working class and people of the UT were discussed.
The conference was chaired by district president of the Society, Sheikh Noor-ud-Din. It expressed grave concern over increasing prices of essential commodities and said that the same has broken the back of people dependent on meager pension or the low paid employees as well as laborers.
The speakers in the conference said that on the one hand the prices of essential commodities are touching peak while on the other hand the employment avenues for the youth have squeezed and there is no concrete policy of the Government in creating job avenues for the educated unemployed youth who have now fallen prey to drug addiction.
The meeting, which was also addressed by Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani a veteran trade union leader urged the Government to arrest the price hike and create job avenues for the youth both in Government, public and private sector to end their desperation. He expressed concern over delaying tactics in construction of Ganderbal Hydel Project which is hanging in balance for last over two decades.
Mir said with the starting of work on this projects it would not only help in power generation in the UT but also crate employment avenues for hundreds of skilled, semi skilled and unskilled workers. He said it is not known why the Government has abandoned work on this project. He also demanded hike in medical allowance to Rs 1000 per month.
Haji Ghulam Hassan Lone, Sheikh Mohi-ud-Din Shilwati, Mohammed Ramzan Bhat, Abdul Ahad Rather, Syed Mohammed Chasti and Mohammed Yousf Mir among others addressed the conference.
