SRINAGAR, Mar 12: Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today slammed the National Conference (NC)-led Government for pushing the people of the Valley towards the ‘Dark Age’ after the snowfall.
“The snowfall from the last two days has exposed the preparedness of the Government to deal with the situation,” PDP senior member, Tariq Hamid Qarra, told reporters at the party headquarters here.
Mr Qarra is contesting against the NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah in the Parliamentary elections scheduled in mid-April from the Srinagar-Budgam-Ganderbal constituency.
“Even the concerned agencies issued prior warnings about weather vagaries, but the Government made no advance arrangements to deal with the snow aftermath,” Qarra said.
Referring to the failure of the Government to address the water-logging of the drains and roads in the city, he flayed the Government for not starting work on the drainage projects which, according to him, had been funded by the Asian Developmental Bank (ADB).
“Asian Developmental Bank (ADB) had funded Rs 2400 crores for some big drainage projects in the state during our rule, but the NC-led Government has not initiated those projects even after over five years. Had the Government executed those projects, the situation would have been different today,” he said.
He alleged that the ruling dispensation had either diverted those funds or had surrendered them due to its “incompetence”.
The former Finance Minister also demanded assessment of the damaged crops due to snowfall and asked Government to give proper compensation to the farmers.
He said the Government has failed to restore the power supply and communication of the State with the rest of the world.
