JAMMU, Jan 17: The 26th Road Safety Week which was being observed from January 11 to 17 in the State concluded with a valedictory function and award ceremony at the Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground, here today.
Commissioner Secretary, Transport Department Bipul Pathak was chief guest on the occasion.
The Road Safety Week was observed by organizing awareness activities like Walkathon, Bike Rally, Symposium, Painting Competition of school and college students, health checkup cum awareness camp of drivers of passenger service vehicles, awareness of motorists at crossing by volunteers and panel discussion on electronic media.
The activities were organized by the Motor Vehicles Department in collaboration with the Traffic Police Department.
Pathak in his address spoke about importance of spreading awareness about road safety rules and norms so as to avoid increasing number of road accidents. He also underscored the need for greater check and vigil on traffic offences by the enforcement agencies to make our roads safer besides saving precious lives and property.
Earlier, Transport Commissioner Dilshad Khan gave an over view of the observance of the Road Safety in the state and the steps taken by the Department and other stake holders in creating awareness among masses in this regard.
DIG Traffic, Jammu Nissar Ahmed highlighted the need for greater enforcement in order to check traffic violations. He further stated that creating awareness can lead to better results than punitive measures.
The Commissioner Secretary distributed prizes among the students who had participated in different activities organised by the department during the week. He also presented mementos to all the departments and stakeholders who had collaborated in observance of Road Safety Week.

Sofi, S.S.P Traffic, Mohan Lal, Deputy Transport Commissioner M.L Raina, S.P Traffic Sunil Kumar, DySP Traffic Shahid Pravez and Gori Shankar, ARTO Board of Inspection Swaran Singh, ARTO Jammu Kuldeep Singh, Punica and Mamta Rajput, MVIs, staff of the Traffic Police Department, Dealers Association, all Transports, representatives of the driving institutes, NGOs , Volunteers and school children participated in the event.
