Paharis get reservation

Srinagar, Aug 30: The Legislative Assembly today passed a bill to provide reservation to the Pahari speaking people of the State and another bill regarding provisions for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens of the State.
The Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004 was moved by Minister for Law, Mir Saifullah which was also passed after brief discussion.
The objective of the Bill is to provide reservation to the Pahari Speaking People of the State. These Pahari Speaking people are economically, socially, and educationally backward and are not able to compete with the more advanced sections of the society who are well placed in terms of socio-economic positions. The Bill aims at providing job opportunities to the Pahari Speaking People residing in backward areas of the State.
The National Panthers Party MLA, Harsh Dev Singh said that the bill should have been referred to select committee. “It is the mockery of the House as enough time was not given. You are just fulfilling a formality by bring and passing a bill”, he said.
The Legislative Assembly also passed a Bill to provide effective provisions for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens as guaranteed and recognized under the Constitution.
A Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources (Regulation and Management) Bill, 2014 was moved by Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Sharma for consideration and passing. The House passed the Bill with amendment after brief discussion.
A Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Pharmacy Act, Samvat 2011 was moved by Minister for Health and Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-Din. The Bill was also passed with amendments after discussion.
