BHOPAL: Placing the Opposition Congress in the crosshairs for not allowing Parliament to function, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Opposition must respect the mandate of people.
We held parleys continuously and we hoped that Parliament would function eventually. However, we were forced to prorogue the session finally due to the unrelenting attitude of the Opposition, said Mr Modi while addressing a gathering at the state hangar here.

In democracy, it is the duty of the party that has emerged victorious to dedicate itself to the service of people. Likewise, it is the duty of the party that has been defeated to introspect, he said.

Former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi used to deride us when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could manage only two seats. However, the party that had 400 seats has now been confined to around 40 seats, he said.
Mr Modi said the BJP never blamed anyone else for its defeat but carried out introspection for its defeat. Ultimately, the party succeeded in achieving a full majority on its own 30 years later. Mentioning about several schemes initiated by his government, the Premier said opening of bank accounts through the Jan Dhan Yojana and linking it to gas subsidy reduced the number of people being given subsidy by five crore thereby saving Rs 19,000 crore to the state exchequer.
Was not the money being stolen earlier Was not the money going in the pockets of hawala traders earlier Now, they are asking an account from us, he said.
